Summary
Published p. 117, with three omissions: (1) this week they return to Reading for a day or two with Miss Mitford. The story of her crook probably originated from her carrying a long stick on her country walks, with a hook on the end so that she could pull plants out of ponds. Now that all the bustle is over, they are enjoying Oxford exceedingly. Their last two parties were a breakfast at Christ Church with College Gardens given by Mr. Marriott: the gaieties described. Yesterday was cold and rainy, [etc., as published]; (2) she has had a most amusing letter from which she will send after Mrs. Ruskin returns it. After Mr. and Mrs. Ruskin return home, they will probably visit her at [?--not at Wallington]; (3) if her mother answers by return post, address letter to Black Swan, Winchester; if not, to Denmark Hill. She will not send toys to the children, as even children grow tired of too much of anything. She wishes she could help her mother: Mr. Ruskin says that almost nothing makes the funds fall. She remembers too well last year and know the spirit breaking time her mother passes through. She is sorry for George, but John can do nothing yet. Only three months have passed, today. She wishes her father would keep like himself. Now that George does not have to go to business in the evening, he should be able to acquire much general knowledge. Let him tell her what he does... Perth must be very dull.
