Summary
Published pp. 106-108, with two omissions: (1) she gave her father's letter to Mr. Ruskin, "who said it was equal to the finest passages in Walter Scott." This being Mr. Ruskin's 63rd birthday, she and John have been in the garden gathering as many gooseberries as possible for a tart. For dinner, they expect the Misses Watson, Mr. Richardon, Young Mr. Phillott, "and two or three others." The Parkers gave her a cushion for the drawing room, and she thanked Louie while Mrs. Ruskin called on Mrs. Bolding; (2) Scraps of gossip she overheard as the Hon. R. Cavendish talked "as fast as an express train" with Lady Frances Hope, including news that "at Westminster, all the people are dying of fever" because Dr. Buckland "poisoned the air" through "opening drains and churchyards!" But it is true that "he has infected the neighborhood," the Bucklands, Mrs. Liddel [spelt Liddle], and Mr. Milman's son being ill. She has had a nice visit with the Pagets and Parkers. John is very busy but will write whenever he has time.
