Summary
Published pp. 98-99, with two omissions: (1) letters from parents received in Glasgow; (2) she has opened the trunk and read the various kind letters. The lace, in value nearly £2, she plans to return. She is much annoyed by Miss Rutherford's bill for £9, which she considers two dresses overcharged and which she thinks it would be wrong to pay from money John has given her for future expenses. She could pay some of it, but please write what her father advises. She is delighted to hear that he is better. Under the circumstances, it is painful to ask him to pay this bill, but it seems worse to ask John "after all the family and he have done." But she will do what her mother thinks best.
