Published in part, pp. 42-43. Birthday greetings to Mrs. Gray. He will do all in his power to make those which follow happier than this one can be, as she faces pain of the first separation. He had happiness of seeing Effie at her uncle's on Wednesday evening, she looking well and happy. He has "already to thank her for the two happiest days of my whole life." [2 paragraphs published--Mr. Gray's financial losses]. But although thanks to resources his father has placed at his disposal, he thinks Effie's comfort secured, he feels concern about Mr. Gray's distress. He himself would feel actual loss at this time preferable to continued anxiety lest such loss occur. It grieves him that he can be of little service at present, but hopes that he and Effie, in due time, can have Sophia and Alice with them, if they can be spared. He hopes that Mr. Gray will be able to extricate himself from embarrassment through his professional work, and assures him that the hand of his daughter is a priceless treasure. At the end of the week they can talk over "the packet" his father has sent. He has not read it but feels sure his "Father would have it arranged with as much care for Effie's interest as for mine." Kind regards, etc. [P.S.] He has heard no reports about Mr. Gray's affairs lately and has not discussed them with his father since before he saw Mr. Gray in Perth.
