Summary
Excerpt published, p. 38. She has not changed her mind since asking her father for permission to come home; more than ever, she thinks it would be improper to travel alone. Last night she received her dress from Miss Rutherford; it is most fashionable and fits beautifully; "John Ruskin says that those whom he has the highest respect for follow the prevailing fashion which has the Queen for the leader." She has bought a very fashionable shawl, and now only requires a straw bonnet, the most fashionable colour not being bright gold and maize. Mrs. Gardner wishes her to stay as long as her mother will permit. They are taking her to the Fête at Cheswick, to Windsor and Hampton Court, and anywhere she wants to go. If Mr. Tasker is in town, she hopes he will call and give her an account of Rosie's marriage. [Excerpt published: John Ruskin will certainly be in Scotland, visiting Mr. MacDonald, but because of his mother's superstitious dread of Perth, will not come to Bowerswell]. She hopes her mother will send her a note objecting to her going to Sutton to visit the Pagets. If her mother were with her, she could make her understand in a very few minutes, and if her mother would write to Mrs. Paget, Mrs. Paget would not wish her to come.
