Summary
Noting that Ruskin is nearly at the end of writing Modern Painters V but did not wish to receive proof till the composition was complete. Because Smith & Elder lay great stress on the book's appearing in May, correction must begin by Saturday, the 28th. Therefore on Saturday Mr. Harrison will receive the "10 sheets 160 pages" already in print "which you will greatly oblige by looking over with your quick & critical Eye," sending them to Ruskin one, two, or three sheets at a time, as may suit his convenience. No one outside his own family should see the sheets," as it is desired to run the work quietly and quickly through the press. My son hopes 20 days may suffice" [Modern Painters V issued 14 June 1860]. May they have the pleasure of his company at dinner on Sunday?
