Notes
The anecdote about Captain Sellers and Clemens's adoption of the pen name "Mark Twain" appears on p. 75 (second series of Clemens's pagination) in MA 679.
The manuscript has been foliated, albeit irregularly, by Clemens. MA 677 (vol. 1) is comprised of Chapters 1-30 and is written on the rectos and some versos of ca. 396 pages. MA 677 has been foliated by Clemens: 1-69, 1-325. MA 678 (vol. 2) is comprised of Chapters 31-46 and is written on the rectos and some versos of ca. 455 pages. MA 678 has been foliated by Clemens: 326-494, 459-746. MA 679 (vol. 3) is comprised of Chapters 48-60, plus Appendix and Appendix A, and is written on the rectos and some versos of 409 pages. MA 679 has been foliated by Clemens: 749-774, 1-115, 1-8, 20-69, 1-14, 139-163, 1-25, 1-146. A later hand has consecutively foliated MA 677-679 in pencil on the versos: 1-1310. At several points throughout the manuscript, later typed sheets noting chapter beginnings and describing missing portions of text (as noted by Clemens) were interleaved with the manuscript, probably at the time of Morgan's acquisition. Please note that the penciled foliation on the versos of the manuscript leaves incorporate the added typed sheets, which were not part of the original manuscript.
With a page in the hand of Clemens (preceding p. 1 in MA 677) describing missing portions of the manuscript, noting that "about 145 book pages missing, or 1/3 the book." In MA 677: Huck Finn extract covering pages 43-61 of the first published version missing; chapters 4 to 17 (p. 62-216 of the first published version) also missing. In MA 678: p. 432-451 (first series of Clemens's pagination), p. 475-489 (first series of Clemens's pagination), p. 559-612 (second series of Clemens's pagination) do not appear in any published version. In MA 679: p. 749-774 (first series of Clemens's pagination), p. 55-58 (second series of Clemens's pagination) do not appear in any published version. In MA 679, p. 749-774 concern the North and South, describing the "average" Northerners and Southerners, and alluding to slavery.
