In a letter from Gibbon to Lord Sheffield dated April 25, 1789 he refers to the sale of Buriton for £16,000 to Lord Stawell (Henry Bilson-Legge, Baron Stawell, 1757-1820) and to Mr. Sainsbury acting as the agent.

Summary
Concerning the sale of Buriton; saying "I have not the Honor of transacting Business for Lord Stawell - but have always understood that his Lordship is very regular in his payments - I am well acquainted with Mr. Sainsbury and know him to be very regular and punctual - I think Mr. Gibbon cannot place his money where there is a greater prospect of the Interest being regularly paid than on the Security you mention;" including an accounting on the verso of income which appears to have been received from a tenant farmer for the "half year..to Ladyday 1789."
