Notes
A footnote to this letter, in the publication cited below, indicates that the invitation to which he refers is the "American National Thanksgiving Day... held at St. James Hall on 26 November."
There is a penciled notation at the bottom of page 2 "Bought by Mr. Morgan from Miss Morse." Miss Morse may refer to Clara Francis Morse (1836-1917) or to her sister Abbie A. Morse (1840-1919).
Morse was appointed U.S. Consul to London on March 22, 1861 and would be appointed Consul General in 1869, a position he held until July 1870. Morse remained in England after his retirement.
Summary
Regretting that he cannot accept an invitation to a Thanksgiving dinner meeting as he has to be in Rochdale to visit his constituents; saying he will return his Report on the Proceedings of the Committee after he has given a speech in which he would like to refer to the report.
