Written from 15 Cleveland Square.
The letter is simply addressed "Madam", however he refers to visiting her at Cliveden which suggests he is writing to the Duchess of Sutherland. The Duke of Sutherland died February 21, 1861.
The date of writing is not provided, however it appears from his correspondence that he was staying with Abraham Paulton at his home at 15 Cleveland Square in February and March of 1862.

Declining an invitation due to ill health; saying "For the last week, owing to a return of my old bronchial affution [sic], I have been unable to leave the house, & until the return of more genial weather I shall be obliged to live by rule & deny myself the privilege of paying any visits however agreeable. Had it been otherwise, I should have had great pleasure in paying my respects to you at Cliveden."
