Notes
Anna Margaret Birkbeck's "Rural and Historical Gleanings from Eastern Europe" published in London by Darton & Co. in 1854 was written by her husband-to-be, Alexander Mednyánszky.
Removed from Brialmont. Life of Wellington (PML 7901-7916), vol. IX.
Summary
Asking him to help promote Miss Birkbeck's "little volume upon the Countries of the Danube", and discussing the Crimean War and Sevastopol; saying "It is long since I saw you, & it does not appear that the affairs of the East promise any better now than heretofore for the interests of those nationalities in which you are so much concerned. I am afraid that they who thought the war would be converted to the benefit of Hungarians, Poles & Italians will be disappointed. - However nobody can tell what a day may bring forth & it is possible that before the Spring we may see a new phase of the Drama. - In the mean time I fear that half our noble families will be in mourning for the loss of friends at Sebastopol which promises to be a much more difficult affair than our Cockney politicians expected a few weeks since."
