Notes
Noel Desenfans was commissioned by the last king of Poland to assemble a collection of master paintings to help form a Polish National Gallery. In 1795 the king was forced to abdicate the throne and Poland was partitioned before the collection of over 180 paintings could be transferred. Desenfans exhibited the paintings to the public and willed them to Dulwich College along with an endowment to build a gallery.
