The accident at sea mentioned in the body of letter probably refers to the collision between the Cunard steamer Europa with the Cunard steamer Arabia, which occurred off Cape Race in August of 1858.

Summary
Concerning his communications with various American journals on her behalf to make arrangements for payments to her as a contributor; informing her that he intends to send one of her articles to a friend of his who is "closely connected with Harpers Magazine", and to propose that they accept it for publication, "partly because it is one of the largest circulating, and partly because it pays highest of all in America"; saying that he is glad that she writing for the Currier and that "The letters" are "much liked, and the change of subject generally approved."; expressing regret that his visit to Paris was so brief, mentioning how busy he has been since his return from abroad, and describing how restorative to both mind and body his tour of Europe and, in particular, his time in Greece, has proved to be; mentioning that he hopes to "make up a little volume" from his "Grecian papers", and expressing his love for Greece and for ancient Greek literature; writing about his visit to Paris in 1853, when he made the acquaintance of "the most interesting men of letters", and adding that during his recent trip he spent a "delightful afternoon" with (their mutual acquaintances) the Grotes (i.e. George and Harriet Grote); mentioning that during his return voyage across the Atlantic, his ship had a collision with the steamer Europa "which came within a hair's breadth of being fatal to both vessels", and describing the calm and courageous conduct of his young niece, "a daughter of Agassiz the Naturalist", who was traveling under his care aboard the ship; mentioning that he saw Tom Appleton that morning and sending her his regards.
