Summary
Writing shortly after his arrival at Cambridge and giving a favorable account of his college (i.e. Queen's College, Cambridge) and his colleagues, and expressing in particular his high opinion of the two tutors at the head of his college, Mr. Jordan and Mr. (Isaac) Milner; giving his opinion that "A young man with good principles and ambition" will find the college "a convenient place for preparing himself for active life" provided he resists the temptations of idleness and dissipation, and avoids "intimacy with persons of dangerous and debauched manner"; noting that he attends lectures for thee hours every day and leads a retiring life; asking Van Essen if he would send him a bank note to cover expenses, as he has not yet received an expected payment, and adding that he will write to "Mrs. Bentinck" who will pay him the sum; further asking him to procure for him some "good port wine" from London so that he may repay Mr. Jordan in kind for the bottles of port he provided to Emperius.
