Summary
Returning to Mr. Adams a paper written by his father on the subject of religion, and expressing his regret at hearing of the troubled state of the elder Adams's mental health, adding that he trusts "that an affectionate watchfulness will prevent any serious trouble", noting that "It is not so very uncommon for some degree of mental weakness to appear at an advanced age" and assuring the recipient that his father "has been an influence for good in this world (where there are not too many such influences!) and that will not be undone by any weakness at the end."
