Summary
Protesting a notice printed in the Independent that was "purporting that it is intended" to pay Elliott a public compliment for his services to the (Sheffield) Mechanics' Institution; claiming that the compliment to himself is not warranted, as it is for "services which I never performed", and pointing out that other individuals, including the recipient, have been "neither thanked nor named" despite having done much more on behalf of the Mechanic's Institution than he has; adding that in a few months, "the great question of free may have made some progress", at which time, the members (of the Mechanics' Institution), and others, "will then acknowledge that ... I have deserved well of the public, by striving long and faithfully for an all-important principle; and suggesting that the "ill-times notice", while it "cannot be withdrawn", be "allowed to die a natural death."
