Summary
Sending her the collection of poems he published entitled "The spirit of the nation", and describing the volume as "an echo of the sentiments of the generation now bursting into manhood, and who hope to 'act the thing they think'"; noting that it will come as a pleasant surprise to his wife and sister to know that the book has been placed in her hands, and refers to the pleasure they took in reading her "Summer rambles and winter studies" together; asking her if she has written any ballads, and explaining that he is compiling a collection of Anglo-Irish ballads for publication which he expects "will at all events relieve our country of the disgrace of such collections of slang and gibberish as Mr. Crofton Croker and others call popular poetry of Ireland."; requesting that, if she has written anything appropriate, to send it to him, and noting that he will be leaving town that day, and giving his address at home as Rathmines, Dublin.
