Notes
Written from the Stafford Club.
Addressed to "Dear Mrs. Phillips"; probably the poet Susan K. Phillips, wife of the portrait painter Henry Wyndham Phillips, an associate of Richard Doyle's, who maintained a residence at Church Meadow in Sydenham during this time period.
On paper watermarked "1856"; the Phillips's were married in September of 1856, which would suggest 1857 as a probable year of writing.
