Thanking him for a letter and for his assistance in working out an agreement between Doughty and the publisher (Jonathan) Cape, noting that Mr. Howard has requested that he send them the entire manuscript so that "the printer might count the words" and that he has responded to say that it would be very inconvenient to do so, but that he is capable of counting it off as well as the printer; remarking that he knows he "must not look for material advantage" from the volume in question, but may "have it as my best, in that Art, to which I have for over 55 years, wholly devoted my life."
