Summary
Relating his experiences as a guest of Lord Altamont (later Marquess of Sligo) and Altamont's son, Lord Westport, with a detailed account of Altamont's investiture ceremony at St. Patrick's as a Knight of the Order of St. Patrick and observations on his character, household, and way of life (i.e., "Lord Altamont is a very fat man, and so lame that he is obliged to have 2 servants to support him whenever he stirs ... He is a very sensible man, I think, and one of the most loyal persons I know. He abhors the very idea of gaming, and does not like to see a pack of cards"), Altamont's attitudes toward gaming, the clergy, his interest in agriculture, daily life in the Altamont household, etc.; Coleridge additionally comments on his reading, his love of Rasselas, progress in improving his French, and a trip to the House of Lords to hear the Union Act passed.
