With seal; address panel addressed, "To / A.A. Watts Esqr / Leeds."
With a penciled inscription below the date at upper left of page 1 suggesting a year of "about 1840"; the contents of the letter, however, including the reference to Croly's unsuccessful literary annual, "The Graces or Literary souvenir", which folded after the first number, as well as the fact that Watts relocated from Leeds to Manchester in 1825, suggest 1824 as the year of writing.
Provenance
Bequest of Gordon N. Ray, 1987.
Summary
Thanking him for "some very amusing nos of the Leeds paper", sending him a copy of The Graces [i.e., Croly's literary annual entitled The Graces or Literary souvenir], and expressing his regret that he and Watts should have "struck upon the same design" [Watts had withdrawn his own proposal for a new literary annual in 1824 when he learned of Croly's publication]; hoping Watts will not comment on the unoriginal nature of the "Spanish Tale", and remarking that the poetry included in to volume is by various friends of his and is "altogether unknown".
