Summary
Stating that he is too busy to "enter into a philological correspondence" with Hume, but that he will attempt to reply to any specific queries which he may have, and asking if the topic Hume's proposes writing about has not already been covered by [James] Halliwell's A Dictionary of archaic and provincial words; noting that he recently examined a manusrcipt of "provincial expressions in the English language", but that it contained "little more than quotations from well known works"; and thanking Hume for sending him a copy of his pamphlet, Suggestions on the teaching of geography.
