Concerning the historical legend which served as the inspiration for his poem "The statue and the bust" ("The Grand Duke used to look up at the window where the Lady might be station's; and eventually caused his stature to be erected so as to exemplify and commemorate the fact: that the Lady was simultaneously possessedby the same desire, and caused her own portrait to be similarly put in evidence was a notion of mine altogther ...
