Summary
Concerning his recent poor health and his unhappiness at having evidently offended the recipient by declining to recommend him for some unspecified employment ("I have suffered in health in reputation and pocket by this abominable thing -- the result of which is that I do not believe I shall get even my traveling expenses. If it should be the means of losing me your esteem and friendship it will be a loss I shall feel more than all ... I can only say that all I have done or undone with regards to you in this unfortunate affair was done with the best intentions. When I found what class of men I had to deal with in those wretched shopkeepers even though at the risk of offending you myself I could not consent to bringing a man of your sensitive nature into contact with a set of men who would have treated you with insult and contempt and who would not have paid you.").
