Summary
Responding to concerns that the name of his character "Maunder Bathos" might be a satirical reference to the American writer Brander Matthews, denying that any connection exists between his fictional creation and Matthews ("I only met him once, I think; and know nothing about him"), and suggesting that the character's name be changed to "Caspar Sprigg" to avoid any further difficulty ("But what if there should be hanging around - and eager for the cheap advertisement of an apology - a Jasper Twigg? Reason totters on her throne at such a thought.").
