Thanking him for a "little book about Walt Whitman", and adding, "I read your gift at a country inn the night before last. I had already read what you yourself have said on the same subject. I think if Walt Whitman was to ask me if I enjoyed poetry, I should answer him in his own words to the wounded soldier who asked him if he enjoyed religion: 'Perhaps not, my dear, in the way you mean, and yet, maybe, it is the same thing.'"
