Summary
Responding to her inquiry regarding the possibility of writing articles for American periodicals, explaining that American monthlies chiefly depend upon American articles or "help themselves to every thing they want in English literature", a practice which, he notes, puts writers like herself at a disadvantage in addition to being "very hurtful" to the literature of his own country, and stating that he hopes to see international copyright established before long; informing her that Putnam offers (only) 5 dollars a page, but that the editor of the North American review has proposed recommending that she be given a contract, following the publication of her first article, offering her "as much for articles as the English and French reviews give", adding "and though sure of the success of his recommendation he will, if not adopted, undertake that payment from his own share in the Review."; noting that he has not received the magazines she sent him, but that Mr. (Henry Wadsworth) Longfellow has, however "seen the article on himself and is very much pleased & flattered with its appreciative commendation"; asking to be remembered to the Goodriches, "who must by this be in Florence."
