Notes
Lachmann and Landauer moved from Germany to England in May 1900 and did not return until the summer of 1902; it is most likely that the translation was completed in Germany as its first publication in "Wiener Rundschau" was in June 1900.
Pages 1-13 are in the hand of Hedwig Lachmann; pages 14-76 and the title page are in the hand of Gustav Landauer.
The Lachmann translation first appeared in "Wiener Rundschau, " an art journal, in June 1900; this translation premiered in November 1902 in Berlin; Richard Strauss premiered his opera in Dresden on December 9, 1905.
Provenance
Purchased on the Acquisitions Fund in 1986; the seller removed the manuscript from the Landauer department store in Karlsruhe in 1933 the night before the Nazis took over the City Hall, which adjoined the store.
