Typed letter signed : Saranac Lake, New York, to [Hermann] Broch, 1940 July 20.

The donor, Anne Polzer, explained in a written statement that her husband, Victor Polzer, "worked with Broch on a committee to save Europeans scholars from the Nazis. Between them, they managed to save, among others, Dr. Paul Amann and his wife Dora, who were stranded in Southern France." She explains that Broch was a friend of theirs from Vienna and gave this letter to Victor Polzer, and notes that Broch was a friend of Einstein and lived in Princeton for a time.
The letter reads, in translation, "It has now become enormously difficult to get scholars admitted to this country because the universities are less than ever inclined to accept new immigrants. I assume that you referred to Prof. Duggan of the Emergency Committee for Displaced Foreign Scholars when you wrote 'Ducas.' Please let me know about this immediately so that I may be able to help Prof. Schrecker. I believe that it might be easier to do something for him than for the others you mention. He deserves it to a particularly high degree."
