The letter is undated, however, Wilder was writing and revising the play from the summer of 1937 through to its opening night in New York on February 4, 1938; the play had tryouts in Princeton and Boston in January 1938 prior to opening on Broadway.

Concerning "the opening of the Second Digression ("the Cartwright interests are building a bank....");" saying that "the sharp attack given by the new opening is fine as force [the words "as force" are underlined], but bewi[l]dering as meaning [the words "as meaning" are underlined]; closing with a possible rewrite of an opening speech by the Stage Manager; beginning "There are some more things we've got to explore about this Town."
