About So Red the Rose and his own southern background; writing that his grandfather, who lived on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, continued to enslave Black people until after the surrender of the Confederacy, due to exceptions in the Emancipation Proclamation; adding that the Union general Lew Wallace (later the author of Ben Hur) had his headquarters in Ware's grandfather's house and "was served by slaves."
