Summary
Angrily defending his loyalty to his new publisher Smith and Elder, and explaining why he cannot write for Bradbury and Evans a few travel articles he had casually promised: "B and E are no doubt pained and irritated by my leaving them: but I couldn't act otherwise than I have done: and it i+s they, when they come to look at the subject more coolly, who I hope will see that they are wrong, if they would have me throw over great and important engagements, and pin me to a hasty and unconsidered word, w[hich] must of its nature be conditional."
