Summary
Saying that despite the admiration he has for the wonderful painter [Gustave] Courbet, he does not feel up to doing what Rosenberg has requested him to do [perhaps write an article about Courbet], although he is flattered to have been asked. He says that when Courbet was painting, he was highly criticized, but now he has gained great deal of recognition. He doesn't see how he [Renoir] could add to his fame.
