Summary
Lavishly praising the Lavington, Sussex countryside; arranging an outing at Horsham with their friend A. W. Garrett; and affectionately joking, " ... Oh Macfarlane, to think that a rag of popery--for that 'stately' service at Horsham means vestments of course--shd. be leading you and Garrett so palpably by the nose. Some people (and Garrett is one) try to keep up their thermometer of orthodoxy by an unbending line of talk or action with regard to almnees, buskins, and apparels, and such anise and cummin ... "; and urging him to visit Lavington: "my purse, my patience, my principles alike will not stand it. --Yours as you use me, Gerard Hopkins."
