Summary
Discussing "Corean wares", their description, their value and their market in England; saying "It is true that considerable quantities have been obtained from tombs in recent years, & only last autumn a Corean brought over a very large collection of objects of all kinds taken from tombs. It included a great deal of pottery most of which was obviously Corean - of the Celedon (plain, engraved and inlaid) class; but there were a good many white specimens which appeared to me to be Chinese. Almost all these pots were of early date, approximately 10th to 15th century. There are certain well defined Corean types, & these you seem to have in your collection; but beyond these it is extremely difficult to distinguish Corean from Chinese & at present our knowledge is very limited owing to want of material & historical information. The Corean collector (W.T. Walters) to whom I referred did not stay long in London, but took his collection to Paris where there is a better market for such things. At present Corean wares are not appreciated as they deserve over here. The Editor of the Burlington forwarded your letter to me at the time to which you refer, & I promised to do an article on the subject, but I have been so full up with work that I have been unable to put my notes together. I hope to do so, however, when I have a little more leisure. I quite agree with you that some of the Corean wares are exceedingly beautiful."
