Summary
Declining to write a play based on deceit for his theatre: "Jealousy, revenge, murder, adultery, --these are dramatic vices so to speak; but deceit is petty and timid, and belongs with no noble qualities, as the others may ... it is an element which can be properly used only in a strictly subsidiary manner--to defeat the ends of justice and right for a time, and ultimately to be exposed and shamed. I should fear to undertake the responsibility of making a successful drama out of it."
