Notes
The earliest surviving manuscript by the writer, who burned her earlier manuscripts after being accused of literary vanity, and probably began a fresh start with this notebook in 1797, the year of her first appearance in print.
The poems were probably used for recitation at the Umbelliferous Society, composed of the Taylor children and their friends in 1798 (an umbel is a flower cluster in which stalks nearly equal in length spring from a common center).
The cover of the exercise book in which the poems are written depicts "The Flight Into Egypt," attributed to John Fairburn, 1796.
Transcription on file.
