Summary
Concerning the retirement of Cowper from his position as Assistant Clerk to the House of Lords; saying "I know not how to offer any thing in answer to your Reasoning - If the End of my own Time did not approach, I would rather have had another fit of Gout, alike unto that, which has tormented me, than your letter, tho' that fit of the Gout has been worse to bear, than any, that has heretofore visited me. As yet I have not seen Lord Liverpool, to whom you have you say written upon this sad Subject nor indeed any other Person relative to it. I still entertain the hope that we may meet in Office next month, however speedily thereafter one or both of us may become private Folks with more Experience than the masses of those we leave behind us. When I have been able to see those, who must be seen, I shall, my dear Cowper, write again - in the mean Time may God bless and support you in happiness and Comfort and so bless you thro' many happy years, enjoying that sweetest of all Comforts - the Remembrance of a well spent Life."
