Notes
Eardley gives the place of writing as "Beausee Park." The docket identifies this as being located in Hatfield.
He signs himself "Culling Eardley Smith." He changed his name to "Eardley" by royal license when he inherited the Eardley estates in 1847.

Address panel with seal and postmarks: "Sir F. Freeling Bart [for Baronet] / G. P. O. / London." Freeling was the Secretary of the General Post Office from 1798 until his death in 1836.
On mourning stationery.
Portions of the letter have been underlined in light red ink.

Summary
Regarding a problem with mail delivery from Lincolnshire; telling Freeling that he sent a letter from Lincoln on August 10th and paid for it to arrive the same day, but the letter was not delivered until the morning of the 13th "by the Cross-Post from Hertford;" concluding "I would not give you this trouble, but I am sure you will wish to be informed of the extreme irregularity attending the delivery of letters from that quarter."
