A collection of 14 autograph letters signed, 5 autograph postcards signed and 1 printed card, to Siegfried Sassoon, written between 1915 and 1960, from Cambridge, Evesham, Kew and Old Windsor; discussing Cockerell's collecting activities, both for himself and for the Fitzwilliam Museum; the safeguarding of his books during the bombing campaigns over England in World War II (Cockerell stored his books at Sassoon's house in Wiltshire); his experience of the war; his personal memories of and his commentary on the legacies of Thomas Hardy, William Morris, Wilfrid Scawen Blunt and others; his efforts to reawaken interest in the work of the poet Charlotte Mew; news of friends like Walter de la Mare, Edmund Blunden and Alida Klemantaski Monro; his opinions on Sassoon's poetry, articles and memoirs; and information about original manuscripts, various editions, new releases, illustrations, inscriptions and other book-related matters.
