Notes
Louis Berard was hired by the Duke of Leeds to tutor his grandsons William Henry Osborne, Earl of Danby (1690-1711) and Peregrine Hyde Osborne, Viscount Dunblane (1691-1731). He provided weekly accounts of the military and political news of the region as well as reports on the education of the two boys in this collection of letters.
Written from Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Utrecht and the Hague.
Most of the letters are double-dated, reflecting the use of the Julian calendar in England versus the Gregorian calendar on the Continent, as well as different conventions about the official beginning of a new year.
