Summary
Thanking him for two packets and for information about a Mr. Macpherson; saying Mr. Laing is endeavoring to have a copy of the work for which he wrote a Preface bound up and sent to him; mentioning the Report of the Highland Society and the controversy involving Mr. Laing and the Ossian poems; soliciting his opinion on the controversy; asking for his comments on his Life of Johnson, which is to be published that October; discussing in detail corrections for the new edition of Northern Antiquities; recounting a conversation with Dr. Leyden and Mr Longman in which Dr. Leyden suggested Walter Scott as the editor for the new edition of Northern Antiquities but Longman preferred Bishop Percy as "his name is of more weight and importance in the literary world, and of higher estimation with the public at large." adding that he agreed that the 'Border Ballads' "were not entitled to be placed on the same shelf with 'The Reliques'. This opinion I understand has been report'd to Mr. Scott & has produced a jealousy of your pretensions and a coldness towards me. The existence of a literary cabal is evident & Scott is the idol;" discussing additional authors, editors and publications.
