Lecture given at the Pierpont Morgan Library on 1 and 20 November 1984, concerning the title of the novel, the "problem (about which I do not feel competent) of how to read my novel, the problem (widely discussed in the contemporary debates on literature) of how to read texts, and the problem (typical of medieval hermeneutics) of how to read the holy scriptures," and touching on contemporary fascination with the medieval, the presence of Latin in the novel, and the identities of the Abbé Vallet, Mabillon, and Milo Temesvar.
