Written for the 1934 number of Author in anticipation of the English publication of Ulysses: "The left wing, with whom I associate myself will certainly wish it published. What will be the attitude of the right wing? Will they dismiss it, unread, as filth or hot stuff? It is a serious book, a difficult book, a depressing book. No one on the right wing could possible enjoy it. But no one could possibly regard it as pornography if he reads it as a whole. It is a mirror of the twentieth century's unrest, and it is bound to get published sometime, if only for its value to the social historian."
