When she gave four Willa Cather letters and one envelope to the Morgan Library, Laura Coombs Hills wrote to Director F. B. Adams, Jr., on 6 April 1950: "It is a pity that other centuries did not see the importance of collecting manuscript material as you are doing for the Pierpont Morgan Library now. If they had how much richer we would be now. I have twenty five letters from Willa Cather and have chosen six of them for Miss Edith Lewis to read when she will bring them to you and you can decide which ones will do for your collection. I was sorely tempted to include one that was caustic and very amusing, and couldn't do it. It was about people who may be alive now, for all I know."
