Summary
Collection consists of 99 autograph letters signed from John Ruskin to Charles Fairfax Murray, concerning the pictures purchased for Ruskin in Italy, drawings of Old Master paintings and buildings which Murray was making for Ruskin, and their financial arrangements. Collection also includes an autograph letter signed from Ruskin to Macmurdo [January 1880] 1 p. with annotations, no. 74; letters (2) written for Ruskin by L. Hilliard 21 February 1880 and 21 February 1881, 2 p., nos. 75 and 88; an autograph letter signed from Mr. Maynard of the Arundel Society to Ruskin 10 January 1873, 4 p., no. 9; and an autograph copy of a letter from Murray to Ruskin 20 January 1883, 4 p., no. 103. On the verso of no. 14 is a copy of a letter from James Knowles to Ruskin 26 February 1873, 1 p. Some of the letters are signed with initials. Collection also includes a three-quarter-length portrait carte-de-visite photograph of Ruskin seated with a cane, by W. & D. Downey of Newcastle on Tyne.
