Summary
Thanking him for his tribute to her sister, the writer Mary Johnston ["The World and Mary Johnston," Sewanee Review, April-June 1936]; giving information about the dates and content of Mary's journals; remembering their correspondence (which Eloise later burned) after the death of their mother in 1889; calling Mary's later letters (which Eloise retained) "'love letters'--full of personal devotion and family affairs, but not introspective"; declining to attempt to interpret Mary's spirituality; sending him copies of letters from Mary to Evelyn Thomson (a paying guest at Three Hills), to whom "Mary opened ...an inner world of immense value"; noting that they are trying to get her novel Lewis Rand produced on the stage; and urging Wagenknecht to write Mary's biography, emphasizing her spirituality and her efforts on behalf of woman suffrage and pacifism.
