Summary
Saying he cannot answer his questions about Scott without going to the Museum but he cannot due to "...a temporary lameness. I should greatly doubt the authenticity of the poem. As to the mottos you can hardly go wrong if you compare those prefixed to the chapters of the novels with any edition of the poetical works you may be using. I suppose we can hardly go wrong if we consider all the anonymous ones, and all those professedly derived from an 'old play' as original. I see that there is an article on Scott's poetry by Goldwin Smith in the current Atlantic Monthly, which seems important."
