Summary
Applauding his candidacy for the chair in English Literature at the University of Glasgow; saying "I can understand your leaving St. Andrews being a severe wrench to you, but if the change should leave you more leisure for literary & philosophical work it must be a change in which all the lovers of Literature have an interest. I hope you will succeed. In that case please to let me know of your success. I will not write more as I do not wish to lose a post in forwarding the enclosed testimonial; though I fear that a testimonial from me can be of little service. You would have had a better one if poor Matt Arnold had been among us still."
