Likely year of writing from the contents which discuss the solicitation of signatures for the Address to Dr. James Martineau which was held on April 21, 1888 in celebration of his 83rd birthday. John Caird's book on Spinoza was published in 1888.

Summary:

Concerning signatures to Dr. Martineau's address; saying "I shall be delighted to do what I can in getting signatures to Dr. Martineau's address. I know as one for whom I would rather work : his 'Study of Religion' is one of the most masculine works which I have ever read. So I will work away as well as I can. But you must ask Fairbairn & Fremantle, as Jowett suggests, for my acquaintance with some of the elder clergymen here is not very close & they might think it impertinent of me to ask for their signatures. If I want more printed forms, I will write you for them. I hope you keep well despite this Siberian weather;" adding, in a postscript, "Caird's Spinoza looks a nice book. I have just begun it. I think I can get one or two Head of Houses for you."
